MISSION

The Gender Issues Centre is a centre for all Lakehead University students.

We initiate and support positive Feminist-Womanist action concerning gender, socio-economic status, ethnicity, religion, culture, family life, sexual orientation, gender identity and difference in physical or mental abilities.

Working from an anti-oppressive and feminist framework, this is a safe and inclusive place to meet new people, access resources, and get involved. We encourage communication, action, awareness, self-reflection and compassion.

A Peer Support is confidential and here to listen, and will make a referral to another organization that is best positioned to assist a student. The name of the centre comes from Feminist epistemological perspective that our gender roles impact our lived experiences.

The Gender Issues Centre is Lakehead University Student Union’s oldest on-site advocacy and action centre. It supports all Lakehead students through consciousness-raising caravans, educational workshops, discussion groups and panels, and events with Keynote Addresses by nationally acclaimed activists, movers and shakers and other hell-raisers for 20 years.

Over the years, the GiC has provided support services to students and continues to work to be an educational force for progressive changes in attitudes, laws and institutional procedure.

For every girl who is tired of acting weak.preview
